Avon History Like the majority of the villages on Hatteras Island, Avon was "assigned" its current name by the U. S. Postal Service, presumably because the Indian names were too hard to pronounce... http://www.hatteras-nc.com/history/avonhis.htm
BUXTON AND AVON Buxton is the community just south of Cape Hatteras, and Avon is to the north. Buxton is situated on the widest part of the Outer Banks behind the Cape. It is mostly cut off from the beach by the National Seashore and doesn't have the rows of vacation homes typical of most beach communities. There are some shops and residential areas. http://www.ego.net/us/nc/ob/buxton.asp
